Dance
of the Sacred Heart
This painting is a visual summation of the process of therapy. One
shares with a trained observer and guide the many aspects of the self.
In examining the mundane we see the symbolic, which leads us into
the archetypal realm. The figures in the foreground first appeared
in my work six years ago in the painting titled Me, Myself and I.
They have been my interior guides, acting out the parts in the drama
to make the mysterious knowable. In such a drama, a life dance, even
the smallest person can gain the strength of an elephant by facing
the inner beast. The lion is put through his paces, seemingly controlled
by the lion tamer, but in the end she has to have the courage to bow
to him, to offer her head to the King should he chose to take it.
The clever jester shares the spotlight with the outright clown. Strength,
courage and humor are all needed to perform in the dance. It brings
together the forces of dark and light to reveal the drama of life
in all of its complexity. The meaning is discovered while the sacred
heart beats its time for the dance.
